Idolatry and Worship

As I was sitting in class last night I thought this study we conducted would be a good one for Apples of Gold. It certainly is convicting to say the least.

As you carefully read these verses you may say "I don't commit idolatry", but you'll be surprised in how many ways you just might.

1 Samuel 15:23, " For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king." (Have we ever been stubborn or rebellious?)

Acts 17:16, " Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry." (He sees our idolatry!)

1 Corinthians 10:14, " Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry." (He commands us to FLEE from Idolatry!)

Galatians 5:20, "Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies," (This whole chapter talks about the Works of the Flesh)

Colossians 3:5, "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:" (He tells us to mortify it!)

Yikes! As you read this I'm sure there may be a bit of a cringe in your soul in that you do NOT want to say that you commit the sin of idolatry. But let's look at the definition of idolatry.

1.the religious worship of idols.
2.excessive or blind adoration, reverence, devotion, etc.

Now the definition of Idols:

    1. An image used as an object of worship.
    2. A false god.
  1. One that is adored, often blindly or excessively.
  2. Something visible but without substance.
Three forms of idolatry would include:
Image Worship:worship or divine honour paid to any created object. (Do we know RIGHT where the remote control is and forget where we placed our Bible?)
Nature worship: the worship of the sun, moon, and stars, as the supposed powers of nature. (spend hours laying in the sun but rarely a moment face down before the Lord?)
Hero worship, the worship of deceased ancestors, or of heroes. (How excited are you to meet a celebrity, or read about their every move in the tabloids, yet don't read your Bible?)

Now let's look at the definition of Worship:
1.reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.
2.formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage: They attended worship this morning. (I think about the Golden Globe Awards, red carpet, golden statues)
3.adoring reverence or regard: excessive worship of business success.
4.the object of adoring reverence or regard.

I think that as we pray and ask the Lord if there are areas of our lives in which we place more importance upon rather than Him, we will find that we are indeed committing a form of idolatry in our lives. How many times have we heard someone say that sitting in church for an hour or so is just too long for them, yet they can go to the movies and watch a 2 hour movie and have their eyes glued to the screen? Or how about a Nintendo or Wii game? Are we at the point in our lives where we pay more attention to a form of entertainment rather than to prayer. Imagine how your life would be if you spent two hours in the presence of the Lord rather than 2 hours in front of a movie or football game?

Do we place more importance on seeing a major sporting event by missing church to see it? Many have but just one to two services a week to give themselves to worshipping the Lord with other believers and would we so easily give that up to go to a Nascar Race or the Superbowl?

Do we have family worship time where you come together with your family and pray, seek God's face, Love our Creator and teach our children to pray or do we stay awake to see a film in the living room with our large flat screens and surround sound while our children fall asleep to the sounds of the violence in your living room?

How much time do we actually give to worshipping God? Do we actually bow our heads to the ground? Do we get on our knees as we tell God how Great He is?

Psalm 95:6, " O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. "

Nehemiah 8:6, "And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground."

2 Chronicles 29:30, "And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped. "

Revelation 7:1,"And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,"

Revelation 11:16, " And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,"

Now I have nothing against a good football game or a decent film, but where are our priorities? When we place more importance on a film or a sporting event than we do our own relationship with God, then we have a problem.
Now consider the forms of Idolatry and the meaning of Worship and see if there is something you can change to reflect what God has created us to do. I know I have changes to make. ;O)

Wonderful devotion! I will email this to some friends of mine. It is something we need to realize. Idoltary isn't just worshipping a golden object and placing incense and oranges before them, but actually every day things in our every day life! Great post Lisa!
