Christian Evolution

The term Christianity has evolved over the centuries. We begin with the original followers of Christ, who first were the Jews who realized that Christ was their promised Messiah, then to the Gentiles. In the beginning growth of the ekklesia, the people had love for one another and they supported each other. They gathered together in homes, by the sea, in boats, and by the river side in intimate communion in the Spirit.

Over the years we have seen a gradual assualt on this kind of Christianity and the cycle of abuse throughout the ages has increased, leaving millions of people spiritually damaged. Most Christians will admit that many people they know who call themselves 'Christian' sure don't behave like it. Jesus told us how people would know who His followers are. It wasn't by the name of the fellowship, or how they wore their clothes. It wasn't by how big a home they gathered in or how much money they had.

{John 13:34-35} 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
If you ask an atheist what a Christian is, they aren't going to give you the same picture Jesus described. Even Ghandi knew there was something not quite right when he said,

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

As difficult as it is to recognize this growing disappointment, we must take a longer and deeper look at the problems we have in our 'Christianity' today.

The definition that is seen by much of the world is this:

  • Christian in name only.

  • Backbiting to get their way to the top of the religious pyramid.

  • Divided from other sects of Christianity because of arrogance.

  • Proud

  • Rude

  • Aggressive..I think I'll get a restraining order.

  • Brainwashed

  • Cult

  • Uncaring

  • Fake

  • Back stabbing

  • Selfish (ask a waitress if Christians tip fairly)

As frustrating as this is, this is reality today.

I asked a well known preacher in my community this question,
"As the term Christainity continues to be abused, what do you think will happen when they no longer want to be called 'Christian' because they don't want anyone to think they are like the current definition?"

He didn't have an answer for me.

I call this phenomena 'Christian Evolution' and I'm not happy with what it is becoming.

Is there hope that the real Christian definition can come back to life and thrive again?

Or will Christ followers be called something different?

"They will know you by how you love one another" ~Jesus
