Christian Terrorists

It wasn't long ago that two airplanes flew into the Trade Towers, then after that all Muslims were quickly labeled as terrorists, even though not all of them are extremists. I almost cried when I saw a Muslim family being escorted through an airport just to they could get on their plane without harassment from the crowds. I remember thinking to would I feel if the nation thought all Christians were extremists? How would I feel if I was mistreated because of some extremists who obviously need mental help?

Now we have Westboro Baptists Church exercising what they call their 'free speech' by picketing with hate signs in front of schools and funeral services all in the 'name of God'. The comments on this recent blog post at CNN has me concerned...aren't you? The commentors call Christians, 'terrorists'.

I have heard this claim by people before...they call Christians, terrorists. This has been sticking in my mind for quite some time... the 'world' asks for us to be tolerant. Many Christians reject tolerance as if it violates their faith to tolerate those who don't live up to their 'standard'. So maybe we need to take a look at what tolerance really is.

I looked it up in the dictionary:

Tolerance: a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

Well, it's being 'fair and objective', but many Christians refuse to have a permissible attitude...probably because they don't want anyone to think their behavior or belief is acceptable to them. Why would this matter? Is it really all about how Christians feel and so everyone needs to live up to what THEY say?

Tolerance has more definitions "interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own" now I can show interest and concern for someone else's ideas, opinions, practices etc that are different from mine..with respect and healthy perspective and still disagree. I can show interest in understanding them and still not be 'interested' in believing the same as they do.

Next I found this definition: "the act or capacity of enduring",  which reminds me of love..because love endures all things. (1 Cor 13)

So I decided to study this word out further. I looked it up in the thesaurus to find the synonyms.

"patience, sufferance, forbearance; liberality, impartiality, open-mindedness."

Golly, those words remind me of God. Love is patient, longsuffering, forbearing, liberal(meaning lots of), God is not a respecter of persons, God loves us before we are born knowing full well what we will become.(open minded) {Galatians 5}

More words that the dictionary/thesaurus say mean the SAME as 'tolerance' are;

"grace, charity, compassion, merciful, patient, sympathy, understanding"

Well..what do ya know? These are characteristics of God.

Next, I looked up the antonyms...which means opposite of 'tolerance'.

"bias, disapproval, intolerance, narrow-mindedness, prejudice"

Well! We sure have a lot to re-consider, don't we?

So the question then is...Are Christians really living out the character of God in this word by it's definition? Are Christians tolerant (grace, charity, compassionate, patient, enduring)?

If we are opposite of this...then perhaps Christians are terrorists. Time for a little reflection...
